THE barbecue is strictly a male domain, and now we know why.

Put it down to instinct, says Dr Mark Horton, head of the department of archaeology and anthropology at the University of Bristol, in Britain.

"Our early ancestors were doing exactly the same thing hundreds of thousands of years ago," said the visiting scholar, who was at the Australian Museum, in Sydney, yesterday.

"It is not surprising that even today, some of our behaviour may be influenced by instincts that developed through our long evolutionary history.

"This may include … why men like cooking meat outside on their barbecue, but women still feel they have a role preparing vegetables."

Dr Horton said hunting for game and sharing the meat was a key evolutionary milestone, from which rituals and a complex societal structure would have developed.

He said the human race had evolved over millions of years and much of what is described as instinct is actually behaviour crucial to survival.

"Our ancient ancestors left behind a myriad of clues on how they lived, what they ate, how they evolved."

Dr Horton will give a lecture on the role of diet in human evolution at Sydney University, at 1pm tomorrow.

Tongs, skewers and other barbecueing implements must be left at the door.

Over the last couple of nights I've been working on a design for *stuff* with the plan of setting up an online store to peddle my wares. Well, it looks like this has been successful. You can visit my fledgling online empire if you like.... Go on, you know you want to.

I decided to go with CafePress rather than my first choice of Spreadshirt, as I couldn't see a way of setting up Spreadshirt from outside of the US or Europe. I'm going to be adding more designs over the next 'while', so stay tuned....

...Other than the above, my day was pretty good. Busy as always, a few giggles and guffaws with the gang I work with... today we were trying to come up with a corporate slogan for our company, which I handily neglected to send home to myself... no worries... check back 2moro and I'll have them added.

Dinner tonight is a nice oven-baked fish with mash potato, steamed broccoli and mushrooms. I've already got my stockpiled lunch for 2moro, a surprisingly pleasant (considering the time of night on Sunday that I jumped up and said "oh shit! I haven't made lunch yet") curried lamb with zuchini, chickpeas and (who would have thought - rice).

I'm currently listening to my new favourite band - 'broken social scene' ... I heard 'Fire Eye'd Boy' late the other night on TripleJ, I'm completely hooked.

...In true form, I appear to have missed them playing the Metro by 3 days.

Has anyone seen my weekend?

Hey punks, how's it going?
... aah, that grim sense of foreboding that comes part and parcel with the end of the weekend. It's so cruel that the working week seems to drag on, yet the weekend is over in a blink.

Friday night we went out in the city for Joeys farewell... and as is often the case, it turned into a much larger event than I expected. We initially started at the Arthouse Hotel

...and then a few of us went down the road to my semi-regular, the underground bar of the Criterion Hotel.
We finally got out of there after much laughter and drinks, and some of the worlds worst games of pool, at 5am.


Saturday morning Alex (who crashed on our couch) and I went over to Sams, for nothing in particular. The initial plan had been to go and see the "City of Shadows" exhibition at the Police and Justice Museum, but we were all in more of a relax and sit around state of mind. There's plenty of time to see the exhibition anyway, it's on until October sometime.



Saturday night was Mick and Brians housewarming, which was a pretty low key affair, but nice enough. Today I spent some time outdoors, went for a walk and watched my new Tropfest dvd. Really enjoyed it. The quality gets better each year.

Also (perhaps) worth mentioning that I've started working on a new painting... here it is so far, I'm quite happy with it, but of course, there is much work to do. I've started working on some designs for t-shirts that I intend to put up on spreadshirt.com, ...more on that soon enough.
